Sunday, 5/29 Carrollton,OH - Bucyrus, OH (3days, 119 miles)

Feeling great - we/re getting into true cycling shape now! The down side is that it has become very hot and humid the last couple of days, and today on top of that we had a constant stiff head wind. This is the "challenging yourself" part of long distance cycling - how to keep on keeping on! Well, we stopped more often, didn't eat a lot, but snacked on trail mix, peanut butter crackers, cheese and fruit often. Also drank LOTS of water. On our last stop of the day about 5 miles from our destination, we were in some of the rare shade that we found today right in front of someone's house, trying to cool off, and a very nice man came out and asked if we would like some water. Boy, did I want water. I had enough to drink, but I wanted some to pour over my body. It was great! His mother then came out and we had a nice chat with them for about ten minutes. After we left, we got less than a quarter of a mile down the road and Bill couldn't get his foot out of his pedal clip and almost fell over again. Good thing I was right behind him because he was literally stuck on his bike in the middle of the road, and I needed to take his shoe off so he could get off his bike. Turns out he lost a screw from the clip on his shoe, but fortunately he had extrras along.

Lots more roadkill! I think my biggest memory of Ohio will be all the road kill we saw. Needless to say, I don't find Ohio very interesting There are a lot of pretty farms, and more houses with HUGE lawns that are meticulously mowed by all those riding lawn mowers. Ohio has this in common with Virginia. We did go through the heart of Amish country yesterday, and saw lots of horse-drawn buggies going down the road. Because of that, we had to dodge horse poop on the shoulder of the road as well as road kill!

We ate dinner tonight at a Bob Evans restaurant, which is a popular chain here in the east. I was contemplating a turkey dinner, but was afraid it would be too much food, so the waitress informed me that they had a turkey dinner on their 55+ menu that was the same thing except they eliminate the carrots (She said that with a straight face). tNow that really makes for a smaller, less filling dinner. The same amount of turkey, dressing, and potatoes, but no carrots. Anyway, I managed to get less turkey and dressing and kept the carrots. :)

We're still managing to dodge thunderstorms and rain. Tomorrow we will try to leave really early - like 7 a.m. and hopefully get to our destination before the heat gets too bad. Speaking of that, it's time for bed!
More pictures next time.

Riding on...
Carol & Bill
