Today was our longest mileage day so far. I did have to walk up the last hill though - it was a monster. Bill however slogged all the way up. I was really amazed he made it! I do have to point out though, that he has 65 gears on his bike and I have 21. :) We have both moved on from being utterly exhausted at the end of the day to simply being tired. I guess we're getting into biking shape for real. I'm convinced though that all the exercising I was doing the the Magnuson Athletic Club for the four monhs before we left made it possible for me to do this at all.
Well, we didn't go to Culpeper yesterday after all. I woke up Sunday morning in our super comfy bed at our B & B in Orange, and told Bill I wanted to stay there - in bed AND in Orange. Well, we had to get up to have breakfast - which was delicious - but then we went back to our room and took a nap! We didn't spend the whole day sleeping and lounging around though. Our wonderful B&B host Sharon drove us the three miles to Montpelier AND gave us two free tickets for the tour. (The answer to the quiz question by the way is James Madison, and of course Montpelier was his home). This turned out to be a very worthwhile thing to do, and we were both glad we stayed the extra day in Orange.
We did stop in Culpeper for lunch and ate outside at a very good little cafe called Sophie's. Culpeper is an attractive little tourist town with interesting shops and good places to eat. And of course every town in this area of Virginia is "historic" and has something to do with the Civil War.
Saw some very pretty counryside today. Lots of huge farms with elegant homes and manicured grounds. Also a lot of those riding mowers Bill mentioned in one of his emails busily cutting what looked like acres of grass. This is definitley horse country.
Tomorrow we continue on toward Harpers Ferry. We should be there by Wednesday. Then we start cycling on the C & O Canal towpath - if it hasn't been washed out by all the rain this area has had for the last three days. There was a big thunderstorm here this evening with a huge downpour. Also had one yesterday in Orange after our return from Montpelier. Both times we were safely ensconced INSIDE.
Riding on, and looking forward to FLAT!
Carol
