Shipshewana, Indiana - Mendon, Michigan 31 miles

Salisbury viaduct

Trail volunteers removing a fallen tree that had fallen

These are two older pictures from when we were on the GAP trail. I'm having some trouble uploading pictures the last two days for some reason, so I may have to get some help. Again!  Anyway, the top picture is of a very long and very high viaduct that took the trail over an interstate highway. The view was great and it was rather exhilerating riding on this structure. We arrived at the fallen tree in the lower picture about 15 minutes after two guys riding opposite way told us there was a tree on the trail, and these two men were already sawing it up with a chain saw. We were amazed. Rather than make us wait until they had a path cleared so we could get through, they helped us get our bikes over the cut up pieces still lying in the trail. Very nice people. A labor of love to be sure.

Today we left Shipshewana at about 7:40 on a beautiful morning. The temperature was cooler and the humidity was way down. Not a cloud in the sky and just a refreshing breeze. What a wonderful relief from the miserable heat, humidity and wind of the last three days!  We crossed the border from Indiana into Michigan in about seven miles, and then cycled 24 more miles to this little burg called Mendon, where we are staying in a very unusual B & B run by a couple from South Africa. The building was built in the early 1800's and used to be a stagecoach stop between Chicago and Detroit. The next two days we will probably be camping if it doesn't rain. Tomorrow will be a 50 mile day, so I hope we're up to it!

Riding on......
